Highlights Of Sunday XI Captain's Report For 2002 Season

I think the term "winning isn't everything, it's the taking part that counts" applies to the Sunday XI team. If the measure of success was more wins than losses, then the 4 wins, 1 tie and 16 defeats would suggest a poor season.

My mission was to ensure that everyone got a game, I didn't want to "win at all costs" and potentially have a few players feeling that they were just turning up to make up the numbers. With this in mind, I hope I was successful.

On the field there were many plusses. There were a number of new players making good contributions: David Matthews providing 146 runs in 7 innings, Alan Coulson immediately becoming first choice keeper, and Gerald O'Hara proving a very useful bowler, taking wickets when the opening attack couldn't, and ending up with 7 wickets at a very respectable 21.7.

On the bowling side we struggled to bowl teams out. But given that we only had 3 bowlers that played in more than 10 matches it shows that a large amount of bowling was undertaken by non-regular bowlers. Harish Bhatt, with his average of 28 wickets at 20.96 over 19 matches, gets my Bowler of the Year award.

On the batting side we mainly seemed to end up chasing a total that was just that bit too high for us. Only 3 of the top order batsmen averaged above 25. Stuart Payne, with a total of 370 runs at an average of 28.46, gets the Batting Award this year.
