Dave Maynard's Report

The President's XI thrashed the Denham XI on Saturday, restoring the long adhered-to custom.

A weakened Denham Xl, fielding 2 youngsters, won the toss and inserted the President's XI to bat on a glorious day. As is the long-hallowed traditionn, the President, John Richardson, opened the batting himself and scored an excellent 15 before retiring.

In came James Nicholas and Ambrose Treacy who put on 29 for the next wicket with Ambrose Treacy hitting Faisal Mahmood for 2 sixes off one over. Ambrose went for 19, bowled by Jamil Shiakh, while James was lbw to Richie Brathwaite for 26.

In came Lee Webber and JK, putting on 107 for the next wicket before both of them retired (on 53 and 52 respectively), then the Denham captain decided to open the game up by not bringing back his opening bowlers. This allowed the President's XI to score 223 off their 40 overs, with Jack Grover taking 4-40 bowling spin.

Denham began the run chase brightly, with Bobby Rai (29) and Colin Tobin (34) putting on 44 for the first wicket. Faisal Mahmood chipped in with 25, Jamil Shiakh added 31 and Dave Maynard 24.

The Denham players were surprised that the President's skipper Ming-The-Merciless Payne didn't open the game up when the top line Denham batsmen perished. Revenge was in the air! Eventually the Denham XI were bowled out for 159 with Gerald O’Hara, Ambrose Treacy and Harish Bhatt (not sure what happened to your Sunday bowling, Harish) all bowling extremely well.

I would like to say thanks to all players for contributing to a lovely game in the right spirit and also a special thanks to the Tea Ladies, Yvette and Leighane Redmond for an excellent tea and for Channi for an excellent curry afterwards enabling it to be an excellent day and also for Bernard Downs, Ken Knowlson and Peter Schembri for umpiring and running the bar

Denham Sunday XI

V Odney XI

No Cigar...

Sunday 29th August

Denham won the toss on a damp wicket and put Odney into bat.

Joe O’Hara and Ambrose Treacy bowled economically without much success - as did young Gerald O’Hara. Skipper Richie Braithwaite did pick up 2 wickets in his 8 over spell, but the Man of the Match was young Faisal Mahmood who bowled 5 overs 2 maidens, 8 runs and 5 wickets - helping to restrict the opposition to 174 all out.

Denham started off well with Stuart Payne and Faisal Mahmood putting on 29 for the 1st wicket before Payne perished for 13.

In came Ambrose Treacy who helped to build a 72 partnership with Mahmood. It looked as though Denham were on the way to victory with just 74 runs needed off 17 overs.

A big Denham collapse followed, with Ambrose Treacy (40), Joe O’Hara (4), Dave Maynard(0) and Faisal Mahmood (58) all falling within a few overs, leaving Denham well short on 157-9 after their 40 overs.

Denham V Pinner

Tthe pick of the Denham bowlers were Faisal Mahmood 3 -12 off 8 overs, Jamil Shiakh 2-18 off 6 overs and Gerald O’Hara 2-44 off 7 overs.

Denham began the run chase confidently, with Bobby Rai scoring a quick 40 and Man of the Match Faisal Mahmood scoring 86 not out to secure victory. He was also well supported by Jamil Shiakh 27 and Dave Maynard 11.
