Denham 1st XI V Winchmore Hill 1st XI Saturday 12th June Captain Dave Maynard's Report
I now know how Sven Goran Eriksson and England lads feel after losing this game to Winchmore Hill. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat on a nice batting track, but we soon had them in trouble with Faisal Mahmood taking 3 quick wickets, reducing the opposition to 54-3. Then came one of those turning points. Denham were sure they had a 4th wicket in a run-out, but unfortunately for us the umpire got himself in a bad position and was unable to give the correct decision. Winchmore Hill then went on to accumulate 274-4 off 49 overs (Faisal 4/64 off 15 overs), leaving Denham chasing 275 off 51 overs. Paul Hazell and James Nicholas opened the batting and began smashing the ball to all parts of the ground. They quickly put on 147 off 20 overs. Defeat at this stage was never an option, then Paul Hazel was out for an excellent 81 and James Nicholas 80 and Captain Dave Maynard (17) quickly followed and a dubious lbw decision did for Stuart Payne for 0. This left Denham 193-6 and hanging on for a draw, unfortunately our grip was not strong enough, despite strong resistance from O’Hara (15) and Jamil Shiakh (9). We were eventually bowled out for 231 losing by 44 runs. In situation like these we need have more application from the batsmen lower down the order because this is a game we should have won and certainly should at least have drawn. V Woodley Sunday 13th June
Oh So Close
We had a 12 30 start for this game due to the England v France game in the early evening. Shame about both games... Woodley won the toss, elected to bat and scored a competitive 227-8 off their allocated 40 overs. This was probably twenty runs too much due to some incompetent fielding and players wandering from the positions given to them by the captain. Denham started off slowly and only really got going when Faisal Mahmood 87 and Stuart Payne 45 put on a good partnership to get us back to 6 runs a over. Hopes were high... Alas, when these two players got out, we were unable to maintain the run rate and we lost by 6 runs.
