Winchmore Hill V Denham 1st XI Saturday 31st July Hero Mahmood
(OK it's Lodhi Mahmood the chess player, but we're missing a good picture of Faisal) Captain Dave Maynard's Report This was a real proud, fighting performance from Denham. Denham won the toss and inserted Winchmore Hill on a glorious sunny day and a plum batting track. The home side scored skillfully and quickly, accumulating the mammoth total of 302-2 off 49 overs. Faisal Mahmood had the best figures (1/37 off 11 overs), while Dave Hales (1/57) took the other wicket to fall. Denham got off to the worse possible start with the Winchmore Hill opening bowlers reducing Denham to a disastrous 33-5. The scene was set for a hero, and Faisal Mahmood stepped up to the crease. He put on 72 with Dave Hales (23) for the sixth wicket, but surely it was just a matter of time before another Denham defeat. Stuart Payne had other ideas. He and Faaisal produced the partnership of the match, putting on 147 for the seventh wicket. We begin to dream of the impossible: could these two take us past that huge total? Then disaster struck three times in a row: Stuart was run out for an excellent 38; we lost R Bowry in the same over; and then Phil Ashworth had to retire hurt. It was left to Faisal Mahmood and Jack Grover to see out the draw in the gloom. Fasil Mahmood carried his bat for a truly superb 128 not out, including 26 fours, with Denham reaching 253/8 at stumps. It was a great team performance overall - a great day to play for Denham. Points: Winchmore Hill 14pts Denham 6pts |
