Denham V Little Marlow Saturday 21st August So Close Captain Dave Maynard's Report Denham lost the toss and were inserted to bat by Little Marlow on a very wet wicket. Scoring was difficult, as expected, with Flash Tobin (12) and James Nicholas (26) putting on just 42 in the first 20 overs. In came Bobby Rai (22) and Russell Bowry (28) who put on 48 for the next wicket. Both batsmen were playing really well, but both got out one after the other. It was left to Skipper Dave Maynard (47), Lee Webber (30 not out) and Faisal Mahmood (22) to bring the score up to a reasonable score of 207/7 on a bowler assisted wicket. Denham struck straight away and had the opposition reeling at 49-4, with Dave Hales and Jamil Shiakh taking 2 wickets each. Alas the Little Marlow fifth wicket pair were made of sterner stuff and produced a partnership of 95 to bring them to145/6 when Faisal Mahmood took a vital wicket, that of Fenwick for 69, and was unlucky not to take a wicket with the next delivery. Soon afterwards Russell Bowry took the vital wicket of Glennerster the opener (also for 69). The stage was set for an exciting finale. Little Marlow needed 28 off the last 8 overs with 4 wickets standing. It came down to 8 needed off the last 2 overs, but Little Marlow battled to their target with 5 balls to spare. V Virgin Casuals XI The Man In Jeans Sunday 22nd August Denham won the toss and elected to field with 10 men. The two O’Hara brothers opened the bowling and did well to restrict the opposition to 58 off 12 overs. A person was spotted walking around the field in a white umbro shirt, jeans and a pair of trainers. "I say, old chap, would you like a game of cricket?" asked skipper Braithwaite. "I dare say I might," replied the stranger. He was subsequently kitted out with a pair of white tracksuit bottoms from the skipper and came on to field. A couple of overs later the skipper turned around to see our new player off the field taking a long and presumably urgent call on his mobile. "Well he didn't last long, " remarked the skipper, but the stranger returned to do a bit of fielding later. In the mean time,Virgin Casuals accumulated a score of 214 off their 40 overs with Joe O’Hara, Skipper Braithwaite, Harish Bhatt and Phil Ashworth all bowling well. Denham opened with Faisal Mahmood and the bloke in the tracksuit bottoms (well, he hadn't done much fielding or bowling). The stranger was now identified as Paul The Ringer Hazell. He and Faisal set to their target in sparkling fashion, with Paul Hazell smashing the ball to all parts of the ground for an amazing 93 in 17 overs before getting out. This knock set Denham on the way to victory, with Skipper Braithwaite 40 not out and Jamil Shiakh 32 not out finishing the game off with 4 overs to spare. Bobby Rai also batted well for a good 22. |
