Sunday XI: 25/9/05 Someone else was pulling the levers at Wendover James Nicholas's Report Denham travelled to the picturesque ground of Wendover for their last game of the season. Captain for the day, Russell Bowry won the toss and chose to bat against what appeared to be a fairly weak Wendover side. However two of their players were actually quite useful and unfortunately for Denham, they were the Wendover opening bowlers. Denham soon found themselves 30/8. It was then that the Wendover skipper finally realised that they'd better feed the opposition some runs or the other nine players on their team would be wasting their afternoon. It was left to Jack Grover and Alan Coulson to graft out a fine partnership of around 80, scoring 23 not out and 35 unrespectivly, which enabled Denham to post a defendable 121. Faisal Mahmood and James Nicholas opened the bowling and both bowled extremely well without getting the luck and wickets they deserved. Would it have been a different game if their opener hadn't been dropped early on off a brute of a delivery from Faisal? We shall never know. After James came out of the attack after 8 overs Russell 'First Ball' Bowry did his usual trick of getting a wicket in his first over to reduce Wendover to 40/2. Shane Bhatt was then introduced into the attack and soon bowled a Wendover batsman round his legs with a superb delivery. His 6 overs 2 for 22 was the highlight of Denham's bowling performance. However the score proved just too small for Denham to defend and a few loose overs put Wendover close to the winning total, which they eventually passed for the loss of 5 wickets with still a few overs to be bowled. A slightly disappointing end to a very successful season for the club. |
