The Existential Crusade:
Russell Bowry Does John O'Groats to Land's End
Sept 19th 2006
The First Week: John O'Groats's to Inverness (127 Miles)
|
John O'Groats |
Firstly, I will just say well done to those that are sponsoring the walk, and those who persuaded me to collect money for the club. Hopefully we will be able to get something nice out of it. Over the last 6 days I have walked 127 miles, mostly along the A9, from John O'Groat's to Inverness. It's not been the greatest experience of my life yet to be honest, since roads are really for cars, not people. But the good stuff is yet to come, and it has been necessary to get this bit out of the way. Most of the wildlife that I have seen has been the dead stuff at the sides of the road, which there has been a great variety of. The winners, or rather losers, seem to be rabbits, who appear to have got themselves into a large number of tangles with the oncoming traffic. Luckily for me, I am not a rabbit and have survived. |

I haven't had the chance to taste any stupidly named ales yet. The only one available in these parts is the heavy yet refreshing McEwans 80 shilling. What is quite evident is that the Scots foocin love IRN BRU. It's even on tap in MacDonald's! Needless to say I've jumped on the bandwagon and have been ordering pints of the stuff. As far as my fitness goes, there aren't any major problems - just the odd aches and pains that momentarily surface and disapear, like the Loch Ness Monster. And I can't complain about the weather either. So far there have been 5 sunny days, and just the one day where I got drenched. Next time I write I will hopefully have some interesting things to tell you since I will be walking along the Great Glen Way and then the West Highland Way. Then I will have seen Loch Ness, the Loch Ness Monster and Ben Nevis, and I will be lots cooler. That's all really but I would like to say a big thankyou to the great philosopher Big Ron Atkinson, whose advice to dig deep, be mentally strong, but most of all back yourself has never been more appropriate. |
