Alan Coulson 's Report Denham were lucky to gain a fixture against Ashley C.C. on Sunday, as Chesham Bois only informed us that they couldn't raise a team on Saturday. Ashley won the toss and chose to bat in a reduced 35 over game due to their late arrival. They set off quickly with the openers looking to hit the ball hard and running well between the wickets. However, Denham were guilty of missing three simple catches and a couple of sharp chances, which allowed Ashley to post a large total of 234 all out. Successful bowlers were Morgan Rees with 3 for 25 and Dave Tang with 2 for55, whilst others suffered from the dropped catches. In reply, Denham were always struggling to match the required run-rate, and despite a stand of 74 between Richie Braithwaite (40) and Akhil Sabherwal (31), Denham were all out for 148, losing by 86 runs. Having secured victory, the Ashley captain Jagjit (known to his teammates as "Bob") presented me with the tea money and they left, despite being offered a drink. I wondered whether "Bob", who batted last and didn't bowl was in fact like the "Bob" in Blackadder. Certain Denham players either left before the game had finished or immediately afterwards, leaving only four players and the club captain to have an intellectual discussion and tell the odd Pavarotti joke in the bar. I thought Cricket was supposed to be a social game. London Theatres next week! |
