A Feast of Runs To Finish The Season With - September 27th/28th 2003 |
|
Summary
Denham sides scored over 600 runs this weekend, and there were centuries aplenty: Alex Hales' maiden century on Saturday was followed by by tons from James Nicholas and Dave Maynard on Sunday
Saturday 26th: Fulmer v Denham (Scorecards)
Gary and Alex Hales - father and son - were sent in to open Denham's account. Gary was soon plundering boundaries regularly and when he was caught on the boundary he had scored 82 out of the 116 on the board. But that was when son Alex came to the fore. He started playing with great authority and power, and once he held his nerve to reach three figures for the first time (reaching his ton with a big six), he really relaxed. Five more sixes (making eight in all, plus 14 fours) were to follow as he powered to 151 not out by the time of the declaration. James Nicholas had meanwhile silkily stroked an unbeaten 67 as Denham reached 304/1 off 38 overs.
Fulmer were always struggling in reply but managed to hold out for the draw at 135/7 off their 45 overs. Jack Grover had the best figures: 3/28 off ten overs.
Sunday 28th: Denham v London Theatres (Scorecards)
Disaster had struck the previous day. Kids had vandalised the nets and the two sightscreens. (One of the latter had been dragged onto the square). When play started, a little late because of the running repairs necessitated, James Nicholas was again in prime form. First he dominated the opening partnership of 51 with Stuart Payne. Then he and Dave Maynard put the visitors' change bowling to the sword. First James reached his second century (his first had been only last week), then, on being told he had exceeded last week's 133, he retired with 136 to his name. The Nicholas-Maynard partnership had contributed 185 at nearly ten an over. It was then up to Dave Maynard to reach his century - which he the did and promptly got out next ball (courtesy of a stunning catch by Anthony Ainley, alias The Master). Jack Grover (27) then had some lusty fun, before young Sam Rogers hit a nice little cameo of 9 not out to bring us to 297/4 in our 40 overs.
London Theatres' Chisnall and Anthony Ainley were taking the Denham attack apart and well up with the rate of 7.5 per over required, when Chisnall (67) saw the red mist, charged down the pitch to Harish Bhatt - and was smartly stumped by Alan Coulson. This was with the score 128. Harish then bowled extremely well (4/32) to reduce Theatres to 136/5 - The Master being out for 56 in the most unlucky way, run out at the non-striker's end by a deflection off the bowler (Harish) onto the stumps. Meanwhile, with Harish bowling in tandem with the accurate and hostile James Nicholas, Theatres fell well behind the asking rate and finished on 222/7, giving victory to Denham by 75 runs.
