Deaths of Former Members

Leslie Richard Albert Smith, 22/6/1917 to 29/7/2005

Les passed away on ther 29th July 2005, his funeral being attended by many friends from Denham Cricket Club.

He joined Denham in 1933 and played for the 1st team and in later years captained the 2nd team encouraging many younger players. He was a very keen player at Denham, covering some 40 years, and enjoyed every minute.

He attended many tests at Lords and the Oval and went to Nottingham to see Patsy Hendren in an England and Australia Test Match.

He joined the Uxbridge Gas, Light and Coke Company in the 1930s as junior office boy, working his way up to become Office Service Manager at Slough and Uxbridge, in what had become British Gas, putting in their first computer system in 1971 - not so sophisticated as these days but all so new then. Altogether he worked for the same company for 47 years. Later he started the British Gas Retirement Fellowship at Slough and was Secretary for many years and then President.

Les was an active memember of Toc H carrying out many services for the community including helping for many years with Christmas parties and Bonfire Nights at Denham Court Boys Home, something the boys always enjoyed.

After the closure of Denham Court, Les became interested in S.O.D.A. - the Society of Disabled Artists - and became regional chairman for the Hillingdon Borough.

He certainly led a fulfilling life.

For when the Oned Great Scorer comes
To write against your name,
He marks - not that you won or lost -
But how you played the game.

Terry Waterman, ex-player and supporter of the cricket club died recently. He was buried on November 24th in the Denhams parish church.

Terry was born in London 79 years ago and moved to Denham during the second world war. He became a prosperous businessman who founded his own plant hire company. He moved to East Anglia where he had a keen interest in horse racing.

Upon returning to Denham Terry joined the cricket club where he was a keen and enthusiastic player until his retirement from the game in the late 1980's.

Many ex playing friends and extended family attended the funeral and reminised about Terry at the Bush hotel afterwards.

Robin Hughes Members and ex-members were greatly saddened to be informed of the death of Robin Hughes on Friday December 9th and would like to express their condolences to his wife Ellen and family.

Robin was a long-time M.C.C. member and Denham C.C. Vice President who had remained a steadfast supporter of Denham cricket since his retirement from the game. Like many ex-cricketers he took up golf and joined the Oakland Park club, where his attitude endeared him to other golfers. Robin was a very popular man, good company to be with, on and off the field. He was a strong character with a fine sense of humour.

Coming from Ickenham, he first played for Denham whilst in his teens and over the years developed the reputation of being a stalwart batsman for the Saturday team. He was a loyal servant of the club for over fifty years and had many fine attributes, he will be greatly missed by past playing pals and those of the present generation who had the good fortune to know him.

Robin's funeral will take place at St Josephs Church, Gerrards Cross, on Tuesday 20th December at 3 p.m.
