Amersham Hill 2nd XI v Denham 2nd XI

May 20th 2006

So Close, Again

A nail biter!

When will the proper cricket season begin ? Another damp, murky Saturday perfect for playing early season cricket not! Dalton lost the toss (again, 3 on the spin) as is becoming customary and Denham were inserted (unsurprisingly) on a damp, sticky dog...or something similar.

Batting was difficult and concentration and application were the order of the day. Unfortunately, that was not our forte with the bat. Only Simpson (22), Treacy an excellent (60) and Payne (32*) showed the necessary grit, character and determination to eek out hard earned runs. We closed on a respectable 178 for 9 from our allocated 52 overs.

Excellent opening bowling from Sethi (15-6-29-3) and Grover (15-4-28-2) put Denham in a good position with the AH 50 coming up in the 25th over for 2 wickets down.

Then the wheels nearly came off...Ambler dropped a sitter (see Champagne moments) and AH rushed to 124 before the third wicket fell. AH needed 50 runs off 10 overs, 5 runs an over.

The game was well balanced with AH having wickets in hand to make a late victory surge. Fortunately Denham got regular wickets to restrict AH to 171 for 8 in their victory chase.

AH batsmen Greg Mackenzie (an excellent 59) was the glue that held the AH innings together and nearly brought them a hard earned victory. A good, competitive game and another 'winning' draw. Denham 13 points, AH 7 points

Three contenders for this week's champagne moment: 1. A splendid six by Payne to bolster our score in the last over of the innings 2. An excellent catch by Grant to remove the Amersham Hill opener Newton (12) with skipper Dalton having moved fielder Grant before the ball was bowled to exactly the right position. 3. Ambler with a direct hit to run out AH batsman Hoiwlett (50) having previously dropped a sitter whilst Howlett was not yet off the mark.

And the winner is.....#3. Dismissing Howlett probably put the game back in the mix just when AH when starting to gain the upper hand. Skip

Next game: Home at White Waltham
