Chalfont St Giles 1st XI v Denham 1st XI

June 7th 2008

At Last, The Batting Awakes

Denham did well to restrict Chalfont St Giles to 214 all out from their full 52 overs (despite Ballard 73 and Joseph 58) .

At last the Denham batting clicked, with the Mighty Usman Khan 73 and Dave Hales 50, a Denham paced themselves nicely to win by 5 wickets with 4 overs to spare. Great win, lads - and a 30-pointer.

Chalfont St Giles 7 pts Denham 30 pts

Wraysbury brushed aside the challenge of Penn & Tylers Green, dismissing them for 96, and needing under 27 overs to reach the total for a 30-pointer to stay well ahead of the pack at her top of the League. Winchmore Hill also got a 30-pointer did Binfield in third place to leapfrog Penn & Tylers Green. Denham are now fifth equal at 63 points.

Next game: home to Penn & Tylers Green - get 'em while they're still dazed from Wraysbury!

Denham 2nd XI v Wargrave 2nd XI

June 7th 2008

First Report from The Linesman

This week Denham played host to league leaders Wargrave on the hallowed turf of the Way and Tillard Memorial Ground. Here to bring us all the news from the match is Denham Twos’ cricket correspondent, The Linesman.

Pre-match preparations for this mouth watering clash began well, with Denham pinch hitter extraordinaire JK figuring out how to use the microwave after 3 home games of little success. While the madness continued in the kitchen, Captain Jack purposely strode out to the middle with the opposition skipper, exhibiting excellent body language. He then promptly lost the toss and Denham found themselves in the field on a hot and nearly cloudless day.

Undeterred by this initial setback, Denham set about their task of claiming ten wickets with vigour. Despite resistance from a Wargrave slogger, Captain Jack and Phil “Pass the Bugle” Dickson made important breakthroughs and, after the initial barrage, the scoring rate slowed. While Phil continued to keep things tight from the Station End, Ambrose Treacy was brought on to replace Captain Snack-a-Jack at the other end.

Two major incidents occurred after the drinks break which turned the game on its head. The first was an excellent over by Ambrose, pinning down the batsmen and forcing a loose shot that Phil “The Philth” Ashworth caught via a semi back flip at mid-on. The second involved a fantastic piece of work behind the stumps from WK Schembers, who, on spotting that the batsmen had stepped out of his ground, brutally removed the bails and claimed the wicket. But when his eyes turned to square leg – lo and behold! – Umpire Ken had missed this splendid piece of cricket because he had been discussing the latest issue of “What Cigar?” with Mark Dalton! Fire and brimstone – Captain Jack threw his cap to the ground in protest, JK wailed, “Oh NOOOOO!” and even the oppo batsman looked slightly bemused (and guilty!).

Despite this shocker, a virtuoso spin performance from The Philth ripped the core out of Wargrave’s batting line-up and Denham ended up skittling out the league leaders for 130 inside 42 overs! The Philth finished with figures of 4 for 25, with Captain Jack, Ambrose and The Bugle-Meister making important contributions.

The Denham reply began well, with Dalts and Rulach opening the batting. In the first over, Dalts showed Wargrave that he meant business by creaming the ball into the Jammie Dodgers of the man at silly mid on! “No balls” proved to be an early theme for the Wargrave bowlers, but they managed to make inroads into the Denham team - Dalts being unfortunate with a ball that kept low. In addition, after a couple of nonchalant boundaries from David Tang, the Surgeon of Ball-Dispersion, the good doctor was out LBW attempting a simultaneous sweep and curtsey.

Rulach remained firm however, building a fantastic innings out of edges and nurdles. Joined at the crease by Beanie they proceeded to guide Denham to their victory target via an array of sensuous shots. Rulach was finally out for 39 with the end in sight, but Beanie guided the team to the target with an unbeaten 45.

Cue the celebrations, led by the Bugle-Meister, and a pint or two. With the sun setting on a double Denham victory, the teams basked in the glory. A satisfying day for all.

Denham 30 pts Wargrave 3 pts

Little Marlow may not have played (no data available for them) so Wargrave continue to lead the League with 127 points by 4 points from Little Marlow, with new challengers Denham now fourth only 32 points behind the latter.

Next game: away to Littlewick Green - thrashed by third place Coleshill this week - another 30-pointer would come in very handy

Sunday XI Versus

And Sunday Makes it Three out of Three

Denham entertained Brondsbury Casuals last Sunday and after winning the toss had no hesitation in batting.

Denham lost Nicholas early on to what proved one of the only half decent deliveries of the innings. Rai and Bishop then began to move the score along mainly thanks to the help of wides. At one point it looked as though they may make their half century.

Bishop was finally out for 36 but Rai and Maynard continued the scoring, dispatching the dross to all parts of the ground. Maynard made 41 and Rai fell 7 short of a well deserved hundred as he made 93.

Denham posted a commanding total of 266/7 from their allotted 35 overs.

Clint O’Hara took a wicket in his first over and a second wicket followed soon after thanks to Morgan Rees and Brondsbury were in trouble at 7 for 2. Once numbers 3 and 4 also fell to O’Hara Brondsbury were well out of the game.

Harish Bhatt then scythed through the middle order with some of the biggest filth you’ve ever seen. He picked up 4 wickets including two excellent catches from Nicholas.

The game was wrapped up in just 18 overs as 13 year old Jamie Firminger bowled the final Brondsbury batsman and they were all out for 88.

Three wins in the weekend for the men from Cheapside Lane. COME ON DENHAM!!
