League June 7th:
On Saturday June 7th Denham 1st XI drew with Little Marlow, while the 2nds lost a thriller to Wargrave.
The David, Joe And Paul Show
Little Marlow got off to a terrific start with an opening stand of over 140. We did contain them from one end, the one bowled by welcome returnee Hales, D., who gave away a miserly 41 runs off his 15 overs. Joe O'Hara might have done the same off the other end, except he turned up late and couldn't be bowled for an hour. But when he did get the ball in the hand, he turned the match around. They finished on 229/5 off their 45 overs, with Joe 4/35.
Once Paul Hazell had got out for 43, the Denham 1st XI reply lacked focus, and in the immortal words of skipper Payne "Denham drew in the curtains" for the draw. Even so, we saw a rapid cameo of 30 from Hales D.,which took the score up to a respectable 172/6 in our 55 overs.
Just Short Again
The 2nd XI lost another heat-breaker, this time by 4 runs.
Wargrave also got off to a lightning start, with their skipper passing 50 after only a dozen or so overs, but he was the first victim for new boy Faizal. Faizal went on to post a very impressive '6-for', full of fast in-duckers, with the last three of his victims being a hat trick as Wargrave crumbled away to 193 all out. The last two of his victims were father and son - the son came in full of aggression and defiance on the hat trick ball, having the close fielder (Andy Leach) moved twice because his shadow was on the wicket. It was explained that although just 15, he was a qualified umpire. Well Faizal knew the rules well enough to splinter his stumps.
Denham started well with Mark Dalton making a dashing 35, and Andy Leach topscoring on 45, and Dave Matthews chipping in with 32. We kept losing wickets. When last pair Phil Ashworth and Phil Dickson came together 15 were needed with 6 overs left. They chipped away at the task, then Dicko went for the big one; hard it went, but also high. The Wargave man took a fine catch, and Denham had gone down by 4 runs.
Toss-It-Awayers
The Sunday XI were cunningly lulled into defeat by Full-Tossers.
Rain interrupted the Full-Tossers innings, so the match was reduced to a 30-overs match. Skipper Brathwaite marshalled his bowlers well as the visitors were restricted to a (seemingly) gettable 130/5. All the bowlers chipped in, with youngsters Sam, Simon and Gerald all getting a wicket apiece. For Full-Tossers, Lennon, Ogle and 'pinch-hitter' Smith all impressed with the bat.
Denham made a slow start and could not get out of first gear, and the scoring rate further dropped when spinners Stammers (3/14) and Smith came on. We lost dangerman Dave Maynard to a stunning catch by Stanger, but there were plenty of overs left and lots of batting in the hutch. Why, we'd soon knock off the runs...
And then we had run out of overs and batsmen and were still 24 runs short.
Richie Brathwaite showed what could have been with a lightning 27 at the end, while Steve Bull scored a patient 21.
Skipper Brathwaite was inconsolable afterwards and was heard to remark, "Call them the Full-Tossers? Call us just a bunch of toss-it awayers".
