Denham WON all three games at the weekend.
1st XI v Little Kingshill
Little Kingshill posted a substantial 238 for 7 off 50 overs. Phil Dickson (4/55 off 15) was the pick of the Denham bowlers, but both Dave Hales (2/54 off 14) and Trevor Blackburn (1/45 - he pulled a hamstring after the 14th over) supported him well.
Denham started solidly in reply, and 'Flash' Tobin went on to score a fine 71. Vital contributions by Chris Johnson (28) and Mr Rip Van Winkle (alias the somnolent Mr Hazell: nevertheless still scoring 34) kept Denham in with a chance, and the flashing blade of Dave Maynard (73 not out) helped them overhaul their target in the 48th over.
2nd XI v Little Kingshill 2nd XI
The 2nd XI have been on the rough end of a number of close results in recent weeks. One day it all just had to come together and that was today. They pulled off a stunning and comprehensive victory over Little Kingshill 2nds.
Just about everybody chipped in for Denham: Chris Ambler got 28, Mark Stephens 31, but the Denham innings was wilting a little at 65/3 when Andy Leach (77) and Dave Matthews (37) came together. They then produced a 111 run partnership after which Denham never looked back, eventually knocking up 258/7.
Simon Johnson bowled the first over, which went on for 11 balls because of wides - but it did include a couple of rather good straight ones which resulted in wickets. Simon had the indignity of being taken off after 3 overs because 'he was bowling rubbish' - but he had 4 wickets by that time and perhaps Skipper Dalton was simply reserving a few wickets for other bowlers: in fact Mark Shepherd snapped up 4 and Akhil got the other 2 as the visitors were skittled out for 84.
Sunday XI v Knotty Green
This one went to the wire and was decided with only 4 balls remaining.
Knotty Green scored a formidable 190/9 off their 40 overs. All the Denham bowlers contributed well and shared the wickets about, with Messrs Johnson (S), Grover (J), Brathwaite and Harish all bagging two wickets each.
It was the same with the Denham batting. All of the top order (Johnson C,16, Matthews D, 18, Bull S, 23, Leach A, 21) chipped in with around 20 each, then there was an inspiring partnership of around 70 between Stuart Payne (31) and Richie Brathwaite (41), the latter hitting the ball very crisply.
Just when it seemed Denham were cruising, Knotty Green brought back their (rather sharp) opening bowler (Lewis, who finished with 4/33 and had also topscored for them with 49). Two wickets fell immediately. The last over began with 5 wanted and Phil Dickson and Jack Grover in bat. They scampered a single off the first and then Phil opened his shoulders and smashed the next one to the boundary over the bowler's head for a 3-wicket margin.
