League: Denham v Great Kinghill and Coleshill, Sunday Side v St Johns Wood

June 18th/19th 2005

Ist XI: Back to Winning Ways

We're still top of the table

Denham won the toss on a real hot day and decided to bat.

Usman Khan took the attack to Great Kingshill and played some elegant cover drives in racing on to score of 42 before being bowled. So Denham lost their1st wicket at 62.

In came captain Nicholas who played some nice shots before being caught and bowled for 7 and Denham were 73-2, then Denham had a mid order collapse in losing Paul Hazell for 0, Russell Bowry 4, Dave Maynard 0 and Dave Hales 0 leaving Denham reeling at 100-6.

Then Colin Tobin and Faisal Mahmood managed to put on 52 for next wicket before Tobin was out for an excellent 59 - showing that he is back to form - and Mahmood kept on the good work with Joe O’Hara in a partnership of 46 before O’Hara was out for an excellent 29, showing what good form he is in at the moment and challenging for higher batting spot.

Jamil Shaikh now stayed with Mahmood for another excellent partnership of 55 before Mahmood was run out for 41, a truly excellent knock showing great maturity. Thus Denham finished at 254-9 off 52 overs.

Denham began the defence of their score with Phil Dickson and Usman Khan opening the bowling, Dickson was unlucky in his first over with Hazell dropping a catch at first slip but Dickson soon picked up a wicket in his third over with an excellent catch from keeper Maynard. Khan was unplayable from the other end with Great Kingshill batsmen struggling to cope with his pace and bounce, but he was unlucky not to take a wicket.

Great Kingshill then created a partnership of 63 before Faisal Mahmood took 2 quick wickets leaving Great Kingshill at 114-3.

Nicholas then decided to bring himself on to bowl and took an excellent caught and bowled then came the champagne moment of the game with Khan taking 3 wickets in his next over, leaving Great Kingshill at 114-6, removing the dangerous De Beer for 80 and swinging the game towards Denham.

Khan then dismissed another batsmen leaving the score 131-7 before Kingshill created a partnership of 40. Then Dickson removed Holmes for an excellent 24 leaving Denham one wicket to get with three overs to get him in. Dave Maynard cleverly ran out the last Great Kingshill man, giving Denham victory and 30 pts which still leaves them gracing the top of the table.

Notable performances of the day were Usman Khan (superb batting and bowling), Colin Tobin (determined 59), Fasil Mahmood (patient 41), Joe O’Hara and Jamil Shaiklh (excellent lower order batting) and Russell Bowry, Joe O’Hara and keeper Dave Maynard (excellent performances in fielding).

2nd XI (18th) :

Losing Draw

Skipper Payne's Report

At last a hot, sunny day. Coleshill won the toss and elected to bat.

With Jack Grover and Ambrose Treacy opening the bowling, the home side were restricted to 31 for 2 off the first dozen overs.

However, when Jack tired in the heat, the change bowlers decided to open the buffet early, with Jeff Simpson and Akhil Saberwal donating 66 runs off 5 overs.

Coleshill powered on to 279 for 7 off 51 overs, with only Ambrose's 2 for 28 off 9 overs providing good reading.

With the sun still shining brightly, Denham set off on their mammoth run quest. With Bobby Rai quickly into his stride, he put on 65 for the first wicket, before Mark Dalton departed for 16.

Then Ambrose Treacy strode to the crease, and despite the need to catch a bus, he set about the Coleshill attack.

With Bobby departing for a scintillating 61, and Chris Ambler for 17, Ambrose continued to accumulate runs, until finally the red double decker pulled up at the ground, and he departed for 77.

With 100 runs still required, the shutters were put up, and with J.K. Bhagodia shepherding the innings home with 32 not out, we saw the draw out (Denham 210-5) to maintain our unbeaten run.

Denham 8 pts, Coleshill14 pts.

Sunday XI 19th June:Lost to St Johns Wood by 15 runs

Alan Coulson's Report

Denham lose high scoring match.

St.John's Wood won the toss and chose to bat, condemning Denham to a hot aftrenoon in the field.

After an early success the Denham bowlers were put to the sword by some strong hitting, as St. John's Wood finished with a daunting 299 for 6 after 40 overs.

The Denham reply was to take the game to the opposition and, despite the early loss of Pete Schembri, other batsmen scored sensibly and at times rapidly. Paul Hazell scored 58, Stuart Payne 32, Russell Bowry 64, and Joe O'Hara 60.

With 99 needed from the last 10 overs and wickets in hand, a victory seemed possible, but the later Denham batsmen could not maintain the momentum and the home side finished with a creditable 284 for 9.

Perhaps there was the consolation of knowing that this total would win most matches!

Monday XI 20th June:

15-over League Knockout Semi-Final vs Wraysbury

Denham faltered against the mighty Wraysbury on Monday night.

Denham lost the toss and Wraysbury decided to bat on a plum batting track and ran up a score off 180 off their allocated 15 overs.

Denham began the run chase by hitting the panic button straight away in losing 3 wickets in 3 overs and were eventually bowled out for 110.
