Saint Nicholas Weekend

July 25th/26th 2003

St Nicholas of Myra

There were no League matches for Denham this weekend. A Conference game was arranged for Saturday with Hampton Hill 3rd XI and the prestige Sunday game was at Uxbridge.

Denham XI v Hampton Hill 3rd XI

Denham were inserted and James Nicholas and Steve Bull then proceeded to set up the best opening partnership for any Denham XI this season: 196. Steve (42 not out) provided the anchor role, while James, a little out of touch at first, weathered the early storms, then began timing the ball with greater and greater fluency, eventually being caught for a splendid 121. A final flurry by Martin Kenealy brought the score up to 202/2 for their 40 overs. For Hampton Hill, their skipper Smith bowled with flight and guile to achieve 0/19 off his 8 overs while young J. Hennessy took the only wickets to fall within 3 balls of each other.

Denham succeeded in bowling 2 overs before the rain came down and the match was abandoned.

Sunday XI v Uxbridge 2nd XI

A strong Denham Sunday XI pulled off a terrific win over Uxbridge 2nd XI at the lovely Uxbridge ground.

Uxbridge were soon in deep trouble at 10 for 4 (2 wickets each for Jack Grover and Joe O'Hara), but their middle order was made of sterner stuff. A partnership of 141 for the fifth wicket enabled them to get to 210/9 in their 40 overs. Bobby Rai slipped in for 2 wickets, but the best bowling economy of the day came from Harish Bhatt (8 overs for 27 runs) and Jack Grover (also 27 runs off 8 overs, but including the 2 wickets).

Along with Ambrose Treacy, James Nicholas simply continued where he left off on Saturday. The two of them knocked up 180 in good time, before Ambrose perished for an excellent 79. Joe O'Hara gave us a rapid 15 to get us back up with the scoring rate and it was left to skipper Brathwaite to score the winning run, with James not out 85 at the other end.

Denham reached their total for the loss of just 3 wickets, with 7 balls to spare.
