Skipper Mark Dalton's Report

Maintaining the analogy for things moving and on wheels, this week we were definitely on the Bluebell Railway: enjoyable, therapeutic, and good fun. For those that don't know the Bluebell line is a standard gauge passenger railway operated and run by enthusiasts and volunteers. Steam locomotives trundling up and down the 9 miles of restored track with passengers gazing at the rolling south Sussex countryside.
And the game ? oh yes. I feel it important to mention the toss because it can be such a pivotal part of the game. The fabled 50p was tossed and hey presto I won again. 2 on the spin. We chose to bat.
We had been bolstered this week by the addition of opener Tobin joining the 2's today in the search for confidence and all being well a bucket load of runs. We got a sprightly start and reached 32 without loss from 8 overs. Then the heavens opened. How can it be possible that for the best part of three weeks and temperatures over 30 degrees we have not had a hint of a sniff of rain and yet here on Saturday afternnoon for the first time in 500 or so hours it starts teeming down! An hour later (and 20 overs in the game lost) we got to the wicket again: a relief to all 22 players who had turned up to play the game.
We now had 42 overs in which to post a defendable total. Dalton (50) and Tobin (64), who was run out by the over exhuberant JK, got the innings rolling again. 100 for 1 with 20 overs left. 200 looked on the cards.
We do have to remember however that we are Denham. We huffed and puffed (think steam locomotive going up an incline) and struggled to 178 all out. Wargrave bowled welll at the death, we swished, swiped, swung and in the main missed. Tickets please.
Game on. The outcome of the game was going to hinge on two wickets. Wargrave captain Drew (two unbeaten centuries in the last two leagues games) and Clark (obdurate, outspoken and plain difficult to get out).
Grover (15-2-37-1) and Sethi (12-0-50-1) gave us the start we needed: tight, accurate and economical. We needed wickets though.
The game was in the balance. Drew and Clark looked dangerous and Akhil floored a sitter at deep square leg. A change of bowling brought the required outcome: Drew (26) chipped one to JK at cover and Clark (23) missed a straight one. Akhil (11-0-42-3) although he couldn't catch this week had done the job with the ball.
The last quarter of the game kind of idled by. It seemed that neither team had the strength of bowling or batting to commit to winning the game. Wargrave finished on 156 for 5 from 38 overs. Honours even.
Champagne moment: an excellent contribution from Flash for a 2nd XI debut 50. A good game all round given that the inclement weather nearly put paid to everyone's cricketing afternoon.
A winning (in the loosest possible sense) draw Denham 11 pts Wargrave 8 pts.
