Wraysbury 1st XI v Denham 1st XI

July 15th 2006

Russell Bowry's Report

In Saturday's game v Wraysbury, the opposition were put into bat and started to twat the ball everywhere fearing the Khanage that was going to come later. As commented by Flash after the game, they thought they needed at least 800 runs to prevent being Denhammed. In fact they only twatted 272 runs. This was because they suffered Gurpural Punishment as Gurpreet Gharkal took 4-62, with classy variations of flight and turn, with peri-peri chips and spicy rice. Nadim also took two important wickets, but without any side orders.

At tea, Denham were optimistic about chasing the runs, and so they should have been. They won easily, by 7 wickets with 5 overs to spare, mostly thanks to Yokuzuna Nicholas's 95, which was a big score, and one that made up for the tea that he prepared, which was short on inspiration and hard to digest. But the pink wafers were good.

There was some Khanage in Denham's innings, but only 69 runs worth. The real twatting came from Bowry you see, whose 70 not out, at the risk of self-glorification was absolutely brilliant. It is such a shame that I am him, otherwise I could have seen a wonderful range of shots race to the boundary quicker than Flash to Bobby Rai's side once he has lit one up.

What I also find regrettable is that there were no (untaken) birds at the club after the game. One feels there ought to be some sort of sexual reward when one has pulled off such an outstanding triumph. But life doesn't work like that and I had better get used to it.

Denham 2nd XI v Hurley 2nd XI

July 15th 2006

Skipper Mark Dalton's Report

Not too much to shout about this week so short and sweet!

The toss was won. And that was pretty much as good as it got for the Denham 2nd eleven er sorry nine. Yes, only nine able bodies this week.

Batting first was the only option and although Dalton (37) and Payne (12) made a fist of it, no one else seemed to have brought their batting brains with them. Dalton showed Frank Lampard how to hit the target from 3 feet away: sweetly timing a wide ball with his right foot back onto his stumps. Payne had a crook knee which didn't help. Schembers got a snorter and did well to glove it to slip other than that it was poor fare. 87 all out.

The Hurley wicket looked a belter and had we had a top order in attendance we 'could' have made hay and possibly scored some runs at the same time. Another time perhaps.

This week the game was done and dusted at half time. Tea was taken at 4 o'clock by which time Hurley need only 18 or so runs to complete an easy victory. We bowled very briefly, took two catches, had a quick beer and went off to enjoy our Saturday afternoons elsewhere.

2nd XI debuts for Ross Kirkwood and Richard Schembri. Hopefully this performance has not dissuaded them from coming back for more. Reminds me of a rollercoaster ride...up one minute, down the next.....

Thought for the week: when batting block or leave the good ball, hit the bad ball. I think it's almost that simple.

Sunday XI Versus New XI

Sunday July 16th

Alan Coulson's Report

New XI Triumph over Denham in Run Chase

Denham were surprised to find themselves asked to bat on a hot afternoon having lost the toss. Despite some good ground fielding, the Denham openers Bobby Rai and James Nicholas prospered to record a superb 145 partnership with Bobby finally out for 48.

With the field spread, it became harder to score boundaries, but the runs continued with James reaching a magnificent century, finishing with 120 not out in a score of 237 for 4.

Other useful contributions came from Hemen Mehta (12), Richie Brathwaite (13) and debutant Paul Roby (12 not out).

We had suspected that the New XI tactic of fielding first would be based on their ability to chase well with a strong batting line up and so it proved.

None of the early bowlers could keep the batsmen quiet, though Phil Dickson's effort of 8 overs 1 for 37 was respectable. Late on the spin pairing of James and Bobby slowed the scoring and each claimed a wicket, Patel for 82 and Jansari for 93. However, it was too late and New XI reached their target with two overs and six wickets remaining.

The victors celebrated with a quick jug (of water) and left. Thanks for the game !
