Tales Of The The Flaxen-Haired Stallion July 11th/12th 2003 |
![]() |
Denham perished in both League games on Saturday but scored a confident victory on Sunday.
1st XI v Great Kingshill
An early duck for Paul Hazell hinted that it was not going to be Denham's day. They did eventually reach 171/9 off their 52 overs (Flash Tobin 39, James Nicholas 32, Stuart Payne 20 and Jack Grover 19) but it was never likely to be enough.
Great Kingshill strolled to their target for the loss of only 2 wickets, although Phil Dickson bowled his 15 overs straight through in the baking heat and got both wickets.
2nd XI v Great Kingshill 2nd XI: The Flaxen-Haired Stallion's Ton In Vain
The Denham innings was tottering when the fourth wicket went down with the score little past 20. Out came Alan Coulson to join Andy Leach and the pair put on 90. Andy Leach then went on to score a season's best 111 and Denham posted a competitive 209.
Great Kingshill 2nds showed scant regard for the Denham attack and reached their target off 36 overs, for the loss of only 4 wickets, with even a centurion of their own - but not with flaxen hair.
Sunday XI v Yeading Cavaliers: The Big Fellow's Debut
The Yeading Cavaliers brought their own hard-drinking crowd (and barbecue) with them, but they spent much of their time barracking their own team.
The Cavaliers scored at a good rate initially but Skipper Richie Brathwaite dismissed both dangerous openers in a fine opening spell of 2/21. His first wicket was a 'catch or perish' caught-and-bowled from a vicious drive aiming straight for his nether regions. Jack Grover and Harish Bhatt provided good containing support, but the bowling hero of the day was Ian Collier. The big fellow returned 5/26 on his debut for the Sunday side and the Cavaliers crumbled away to 132 all out.
Paul Hazell completed a wretched weekend for him by getting his second duck of the weekend, but Andy Leach was in no mood to hang around. He contributed a lightning 37 - he said he'd been pretty restrained yesterday - before he tried the vertical drive.
Ian Collier (45 not out) and Jack Grover (29 not out) then clouted the Cavaliers' spinners to all parts of the park to give Denham victory on 22.1 overs for the loss of just 3 wickets.
