Denham Do The Double! Denham achieve the Cricketers Darts League double. Denham had a terrific final week of the season, winning the cup and their last league match. The Cup Final last Wednesday was always going to be a nailbiting affair against Uxbridge and although Denham had won after completing the pairs matches, it was always close and all four pairs games could have gone either way. It was their finishing which enabled the Denham lads to walk away with the trophy. The team got off to a terrific start with Tom and James winning their match 2-1. Their supporters were nervous and so were they and it took a little time for them to settle down before their superior finishing saw them home. Coming on second, Keith and Ian played even better darts and so did the opposition. In a terrific game with consecutive tons by each player they crossed the line 3-0 victors, leaving the Uxbridge pair totally shattered. Dan and Russell battled bravely in the followiing game and despite Russell scoring 135 and 140, went down 1-2. Now we were getting nervous in the knowledge that Uxbridge had kept a strong pair until last. It was now up to Ray and Tony to produce the goods and they did too. Their 2-1 took Denham to the required 8 legs for victory. It was a great night with a high standard of darts by both teams. Friday's final match of the season against a weakened Hayes 'A' team completed the dream for the players, repeating the feat of their ancestors 20 years before. They could have been excused for a lack of concentration as the league had been won the previous week, but Tom and James led from the front with a convincing 3-0 winning start. Keith and Dan suffered a setback in losing 1-2, but then Ray and Tony, throwing some of their best darts of the season and averaging 21 per dart each, gained a 2-1 win. Tricky and Pete were not up to their usual standard and lost 1-2. Both Foursomes and the Eights were won by Denham who ran out deserved 10-5 winners on the night. Ken Knowlson, the only remaining player from the successful team 20 years ago, said that this year's team was the better of the two. There were no 'Super-Stars', everyone did their bit at some time during the season. They liked to have a good laugh and supported each other through good times and bad. Now we hope the cricketing side can emulate the darts boys. |
