Girp And The Stallion August 23rd/24th 2003 |
|
Summary
A wonderful performance by Girp against Penn & Tylers Green could not stop Denham 1st XI going down by 2 wickets in a tight finish, while the 2nd XI continuted their impressive recent form by brushing aside the challenge of Hurley. The Stallion was at the fore with bat and ball.
Denham v Penn & Tylers Green 1st XI (No scorecard - book not available)
Denham were going well at 71/1, then 3 wickets fell in a single over. After that it was downhill all the way, with Penn's spinner Francis picking up 5/9 as Denham crumbled to 155 all out. Dave Maynard topscored with 31, with useful contributions by Dave Hales (29) and Flash Tobin (27).
It didn't seem enough, but a wonderful display of spin bowling by Girp (6/49) kept the result in doubt right up to the end, with Penn & Tylers Green 140/8 at one stage, but the visitors kept their heads to scrape home by 2 wickets.
Denham v Hurley XI (No scorecard - book not available)
The Flaxen-Haired Stallion (Andy Leach) soon put his imprint on the game. At the other end Faisal and Alex Hales bowled well, but the wickets went to the Stallion (6/32) as Hurley were dismissed for 144 in 44.4 overs. Skipper Mark Dalton reported how pleased he was with the general level of fielding, with JK, Phil Ashworth and Akhil taking some blinding catches.
Akhil carried his bat for 57 not out, with his best support coming from none other than The Stallion (54 not out) as Denham stormed to a 7-wickets victory in 41 overs.
This victory, with a full 30 points to only 3 for Hurley, puts Denham above them in the League. In fact Denham had shot up to fourth in the provisional league table published on the 25th August, but this omitted any details of the Braywood vs Binfield match, which could affect the placings.
