Coleshill 1st XI v Denham 1st XI

August 19th 2006

James Nicholas's Report

It was quite surprising that Denham's game against Coleshill ever started but both teams agreed to begin the game on a pitch more suited to ducks!

Denham made 171/5 from 41 overs before the weather finally defeated the two sides and the game was abandoned. Denham took 8 points to Coleshill's 7.

Sunday: Denham v Uxbridge 2nd XI

August 20th 2006

Russell Bowry's Report

On Sunday Denham played Uxbridge for the second time this season, and although Denham were victorious for the second time, the visitors provided the best cricket, when their youngsters showed the bigger boys how to twat the ball.

Skipper Bowry tossed well and chose to bat first and Denham collected 234 for 9 off their 40 overs. Bowry scored a quick 64, Nicholas cheaped 60* and Shaikh scored 26.

Notable failures included Bitchie Raithwaite, (triggered by Stuart Payne) and Joe O'Hara, who could only launch a full-toss straight into midwicket's hands in the style of Schemberito Deluxe.

Despite these failures, Denham felt they had done enough, considering most of the opposition were either balding or pubeless. The Uxbridge reply was slow, mainly due to "Horrible" Harish Bhatt. His 8-0/14 was an exceptional piece of bowling, especially for someone not used to opening. Kirkwood, the other opener, also contributed to the slow scoring rate - Uxbridge were only 87 for 1 after 20 overs and needed to start twatting.

However, when wickets eventually fell, mainly thanks to "Bitchin" Bobby Rai's cunning spin (8-2/40) and Bitchie Raithwaite's brilliant catch at mid-off, Uxbridge's little kiddies came to the crease and batted superbly. They twatted the ball everywhere. Bowry was twatted out of his silly mid-off position, taking a fearful blow to the fingers, which became hideously swollen and bruised.

Then the egos of Nicholas and Shaikh took a bruising as a four foot tall batsmen called D.Patel (36 not out) hit them both for boundary after boundary. A slightly bigger person, but not much older, called E.Spicer (43) hit them both for six! Although these two excellent players could not force a victory for Uxbridge, who finshed 20 runs short of their target, they provided the best entertainment by miles and deserve a joint man-of-the-match award. A brilliant performance, and thank goodness Gary Glitter wasn't there to spoil it!
