Not Disgraced
Denham's batting rather let them down against Chalfont St Giles. Denham's bowlers had earlier done a creditable job restraining the home side, where the powerful A Forshaw scored an unbeaten 124 out of their 240 all out in 49.1 overs. Denham's batting stuttered and spluttered, but they held on to collect 8 points for a losing draw (the home side got 16) at 150/8. They stay d seventh in the League as their nearest rivals Braywood and Winchmore Hill both lost but still got 5-6 points each. 1st XI averages | League Tables
2s Rolled Over Denham 2s entertained Hurley in the expectation of gaining revenge over their old rivals. Instead the Hurley boys thrashed the Denham bowlers to the tune of 288/5 off a mere 48 overs (P Ridgeway 123, S Taylor 54). Wearied by having chased the ball to all parts in blazing heat, the Denham batsmen crumbled away to 109 all out, despite JK Bhagodia's brave 48. Points 30 to Hurley, just 3 to Denham, who remain eighth. |
THE SWORD IS MIGHTIER THAN THE PENN
Denham arrived at Penn Street on a scorching Sunday to find they had to change in a dirty loft with no washing facilities. Skipper Bobby Rai lost the toss and Denham were fielding in the heat. Far from being happy bunnies, Denham set about their task with tight opening bowling from Joe O'Hara (8 overs 1 for 29) and Hemen Mehta (8 overs 0 for 22). After a few characteristic squeals, Harish Bhatt bowled a superb 8 overs for only 17 runs, supported by good fielding and the pressure was on Penn Street. Bobby prescribed a 7 over spell from Dr. Tang, which was an astute diagnosis as he claimed 2 for 29. Although Penn Street increased the run rate, wickets fell, with Bobby taking 2 for 21, Sir I.V.A. Braithwaite Richards 2 for 8 and Kirval Bhatt 1 for 11. A modest total of 141 looked to be easily attainable but......... Denham were soon 19 for 4 after 4 overs, with Bobby, Ricky Rehatt, Mark Dalton and Dave Maynard back in the pavilion. It was time for Joe O'Hara "The Sword", capably supported by Sir Braithwaite (23) to carve the bowling to all parts of the ground. His 98 not out took only 17 overs and included 2 sixes and 18 fours. The fiercest critic of the changing conditions had his revenge, with Denham reaching their target for the loss of 5 wickets after only 21.2 overs. P.S. A muted Bill Nicholas attended, sans tank top again - well it was a hot day I suppose. |
