Denham v Little Kingshill,
April 30th 2005

No Damp Squib
Denham's first league game of the season got of to a bad start with new captain James Nicholas losing the toss on a slow and damp wicket and were inserted to bat by Little Kingshill.
The old reliable partnership of Tobin and Nicholas got of to a steady start with 10 for no loss then a mass collapse happened and suddenly Denham were 25-5 with Tobin 3, Nicholas 11, Bowry 2, Dix 0 and Mahmood 2 on all back in the hutch.
Then came the biggest partnership of the game between Hazell and Maynard putting on 26 for the next wicket before Hazell was unlucky bowled playing on for 23 which was the biggest score of the game then Maynard was out shortly afterwards getting caught off his head for 8.
Denham were finally out for 57 of 24.5 overs with D.Chandler taking 8-24 off 12.5 overs.
You would have thought the game was truly over with the visitors only wanting 58 to win, but we had other ideas.
We got off to a great start with Phil Dickson taking a wicket in the first over and he was well supported by Jamil Shaikh from the other end. We had the opposition 8-5 at one stage with Dickson taking 3 wickets and Jamil Shaikh 2 wickets.
Denham kept piling the pressure on and eventually bowled out Little Kingshill for 37 with Phil Dickson taking a memorable 7-16 off 8.3 overs - and surpassing Jeff Simpson's previous club record of 7-22 - while Jamil Shaik also had impressive figures: 3-17 off 8 overs.
This gave Denham a magnificent victory and a great start to their league campaign. So Denham 1st XI were top of the league by 4.30 as all the other clubs were still playing and the 2nd XI were also top of their league before a ball was bowled as their opposition cancelled due to player inavailability.
