Denham v Fulmer, April 23rd 2005

Last Ball Thriller

James Nicholas, the new Denham 1st XI captain, won his first toss on a overcast and drizzly day and decided to put Fulmer into bat.

We soon had them in trouble with Jamil Shiakh taking two quick wickets and Jack Grover taking the other, leaving them reeling at 20-3. They rallied, mainly through 106 from Shakir, to reach 182/9 off their allocated 40 overs.

The pick of the bowlers were Captain Nicholas (3-16) and Jamil Shiak (2-16).

Denham began the run chase with an opening partnership of 80 between Mark Dalton and James Nicholas before Dalton fell for 36. Then Denham lost two quick wickets in Paul Hazell 1, and Usman Khan 1, leaving Denham at 90-3.

in came Joe O’ Hara, who increased the run rate by hitting an aggressive 16 before falling. Denham now needed 60 of the last 10 overs. Faisal Mahmood contributed 16 before perishing, and it was all down to the last over.

Denham needed 9 to win with Nicholas and Dave Tang at the wicket. Dave took 7 runs off 5 balls before Nicholas was run out for 70, with Denham needing just one run to win with only the one ball remaining. Dave scrambled a leg bye off it to give Denham a thrilling victory. We couldn't have had a better curtain-raiser to the season.
