Sunday: Denham v Jordan's Taverners

April 22nd 2007

Disappointing Defeat for Denham

Even a magnificent career best score of 162 by James Nicholas was not enough to secure victory for Denham against Jordan's Taverners.

Last week 178 runs proved to be insufficient, but when Denham posted a score of 274 for 6, theywere confident it would be enough...........

Denham began well with an opening stand of 54 before Akhil Saberwal was bowled. Stuart Payne joined James Nicholas and they took the score to 117 before Stuart was caught. Joe O'Hara and James increased the momentum, helped by a number of extras and by the time Joe was out for 35, they had added 93 runs, with James reaching his century.

More runs flowed from James's bat until he was bowled for 162, a tremendous effort in a score of 274 for 6 and well worth the bugle calls from Phil Dickson when James reached the 100 and 150 landmarks.

Taverners reply was circumspect with Phil bowling 8 overs for 24 and Harish Bhatt 5 overs 2 for 25.

However, the Taverners innings gathered momentum and the combined bowling efforts of Joe, James, Akhil and Richie Braithwaite couldn't prevent the good batsmen of the Taverners from reaching their target with 5 balls to spare.

Denham should perhaps rue the fact that they managed only 16 runs from their last 5 overs, whereas Jordan's Taverners chased down a large total, despite needing 170 from the last 20 overs.
