April 19th/20th 2003

Animated Denham batsman

Paul The Pulveriser

On Saturday 19th April Denham treated their host of fans to a feast of runs, amassing 305/1 in their 35 overs :

Old Eastcotians crumbled to 106 all out, with the wickets shared out among seven Denham bowlers (James Nicholas and Phil Dickson getting two each)

Stuart Payne, A Rock Among Pebbles

On April 20th Denham collapsed early against a lively Flackwell Heath attack, losing five quick wickets. Stuart Payne stood firm, finding a stout supporter in Harish Bhatt (22), and went on to post an unbeaten 82, with Denham reaching 155 off their 40 overs.

Flackwell Heath's Ward then proceeded to smash Denham's opening attack all over the park. At the end of 8 overs the visitors already had over 70 on the board. Ward got to his half-century in the tenth over - all catches were going down.

A double bowling switch to the flighted wiles of Pete Schembri and Phil Ashworth caused immediate damage, with young Sam Rogers showing the seniors how it should be done by holding on to a skier.

Wickets tumbled steadily until the visitors were 137 for 8 on a dull and murky evening. Just as victory seemed certain to go Denham's way, the visitors found the way to the boundary again and held out for a tense two-wickets victory.

Phil got 3/12 in his 8 overs and Pete 2/38, while Captain for the day James Nicholas also chipped in with two wickets (on consecutive balls).

Could this be the first weekend when a Denham opening batsman in each match carried his bat (Mark on Saturday, Stuart on Sunday) throughout the innings?
